The felt-lined tray on the parts bench showed a vacant square outlined by compressed fibres where a weight clip once lay. Pearl bent closer, brushing her fingertips across the pale impression, then scanned the steel-grey surface for the missing piece. Vaughn’s top already hummed inside the distant bowl, its rhythm rising like a tiny gallop along the scratched plastic. Two silver clips remained, so she selected the lighter pair and slid them onto her translucent disc in careful order. The blue-grey cord curled around the notched spindle while a mellow band of afternoon light crossed her wrists. Pearl paused, listening for the pitch that promised balance, yet the cord tugged unevenly, hinting at hidden strain.
From the window ledge, a cat chose that moment to leap toward the sunlight, tipping an umbrella that rested against the frame. The fabric still glistened from a brief shower, and droplets spattered across the bench, dissolving faint pencil markings on the reference card. Pearl jerked back as cold specks reached her knuckles, then hurried to right the umbrella before more water escaped. A chair leg squeaked when she stepped away, and her half-wound launcher remained on the bench, idle. Back at the arena, Vaughn’s disc had drifted off centre and the sunpatch had moved, leaving the nearer half in shadow-blue coolness. The plastic under that shade felt firmer, and tiny cracks revealed themselves where earlier warmth had masked them.
Pearl adjusted her plan without swapping parts, deciding that timing now mattered far more than weight. She waited until Vaughn’s hum dropped a notch, then drew the grey cord in calm rhythm so the spindle gripped every strand. A single fibre snapped, yet the launcher held, and her disc released as Vaughn’s rim brushed a deep scratch at the centre. The fresher plastic on the cool side offered lower friction, letting her top leap forward and nudge his toward the warmer zone. Their twin tones blended into a mellow duet while the cat crouched nearby, tail flicking at each collision. Pearl leaned over the rim, eyes tracking the widening orbit, and her thumb kept steady pressure against the thinning cord.
Translation
