The grain scoop felt warm against Maren's chilled fingertips, even though it hung inside the shaded shed. Each metal bucket chimed when she lifted it, and the handles sent tiny rattles through the quiet air. She had already sprinkled grain for the chickens earlier in the circuit, pausing only long enough to check their water. Now a heavier bucket dragged at her arm during the short walk toward the waiting goat pen. The dog trotted beside her, collar ringing like loose coins, pausing only to nose a stick that promised fetch. Near the gate a hinge groaned, and the goats responded with impatient bleats that overlapped in uneven rhythm. Maren leaned forward and slid the rusty bolt slowly, but the stiff gate still resisted her effort. Dried mud along the hinge muffled its movement and stole precious seconds before the morning circuit could continue.
A sudden hollow thud broke the pattern: the stick clattered against the rabbit hutch as the dog chased a darting barn cat. Maren spun toward the commotion; claws scraped, wire rattled, and feathers from nearby hens fluttered like torn paper. She hurried to calm the animals, leaving the heavy bucket propped inside the pen against the splintered fence. During her brief absence the wind rose, carrying a low hum from the distant water pump across the yard. By the time she returned, silence had replaced the earlier clamor, yet the scene before her had transformed. The bucket lay on its side, grain scattered in loose heaps across the ground by the fence. Two goats tromped through the mess, hooves clicking and turning the kernels into sticky paste against the damp soil.
Maren exhaled through pursed lips, then altered her stance, bracing one boot against the post to halt the scatter. Instead of trying to drag the now-muddy bucket upright, she crouched and swept remaining grain into the manger by hand. The goats’ chewing produced a steady crunch that mixed with the distant creak of the compost gate where her brother worked. She could perceive the portion was small, so she folded a slab of hay and wedged it lower in the rack. A faint drip echoed inside the empty bucket, marking each second like a soft metronome beneath the farm chorus. At the same hour, the orchard beyond the lane carried the steady whirr of the landscaper’s trimmer through the waking leaves.
Translation
