The tray’s brushed surface felt gritty under his thumbnail, and a few round pellets rolled over the rim and tapped his wrist. Dawn, his older sister, stood a few steps away among the supply shelf hooks, comparing two smooth leash handles. Between them, strip lights hummed and the glass tanks along the aquarium aisle flashed damp reflections. Lyle’s goal was simple: collect the right weight of treats before his turn in the small-animal zone began. The wooden scoop handle, smelling of fresh woodworking shavings, sat heavy in his palm. His determination kept both elbows pressed to the counter as he prepared to add a second measure.

The extra pour landed too hard; pellets bounced, scattered across the metal pan, and several dropped onto the plastic lid below. The sudden clatter rattled the nearest stack of bird cages. A yellow parakeet burst upward, wings brushing the bars with a dry rustle that shook loose a thread of seed husks. The floating flakes drifted through a thin crevice above the display cages and fell near the entrance. A wild sparrow darted inside after them. Its tiny claws gripped the hamster enclosure’s top mesh, the quick landing sending a faint tremor through the bedding. Beneath the wood shavings, a sleepy hamster twitched and began running. Its wheel gave a low, rubbery squeak that spread through the shelving like a slow drum.

The shelf vibration unsettled the scale, and the pointer wobbled far past the target line. Lyle eyed the overflowing pile, then pinched the uppermost layer of pellets and lifted them away. The simple subtraction quieted the pan at once. With the noise gone, the hamster slowed, and the sparrow, finding no more flakes, slipped back through the same crevice. The parakeet folded its feathers against the bar again. For a moment the shop showed quiet symbiosis: glass stayed still, water kept its steady burble, and animals adjusted to one another. Beside the scale, two loosened pellets rolled in slow circles toward the chrome lip.
