A broad shine once filled the depression in the courtyard stone; now only a misshapen sheet of water clung to the centre. Tamsin crouched beside the warm paving to inspect the shrinking puddle while her cousin York leafed through a comic on the metal bench, each page giving a soft whish that floated over the courtyard. From her low view the evaporation rim produced a faint hiss, like steam escaping a kettle, and tiny ticks burst where air escaped the thinning film. She wanted to sketch the branching mineral pattern left behind, hoping to capture at least a fraction of it before footsteps or wind brushed the design away. The aim felt simple: draw quickly, then compare lines with the reflective centre that still mirrored the sky and an unsteady branch overhead.
She settled on the sunlit side, pencil tapping against paper, but leaning closer threw her own shadow across the bright meniscus and slowed the retreating edge. Pulling back restored the light yet placed the pattern just beyond comfortable focus; her head tilted in a questioning angle, searching for balance. A persistent drip from the gutter punctuated every half-minute, and each tap showed how far the water had travelled since the last splash. An ant marched across the newly dried zone like a curious explorer, its path breaking a thin crust of sediment with crisp crackles. Tamsin realised the whole scene would not fit into her notebook before the surface vanished, so she reduced her ambition, tracing only the zigzag where wet stone cooled her fingertips. The persistence of heat on the surrounding slabs continued to sustain a slow inward crawl, swallowing details faster than her pencil could move.
By the time the next page of York’s comic rustled, the puddle had shrunk to a dark bead, and her sketch showed just one bold stripe instead of the full lace she had imagined. She lifted the notebook; droplets rolled from its lower edge and fell with soft plops, erasing two fresh specks of color on the stone. Tamsin smiled at the incomplete map, folded the pencil away, and rose as the last bubble at the rim burst without sound. Bicycle tyres hissed beyond the wall, and the courtyard kept its quiet rhythm while the mineral pattern faded under expanding light.
