A hand already adjusting the chequered cloth met Reed’s as he dropped the first stone peg. Paloma’s quick laugh drifted between a flick of fabric and the rustle of grass, the two motions scraping like distant sandpaper. Their terrier’s collar rattled near the uphill edge, and every short pant popped in small bursts against the blanket. Beyond the slope, glass panels of the park greenhouse pinged whenever a seed husk struck them. The brittle taps rode on playful breezes that swept lightly along the nearby nature trail. Reed lifted the heavy wicker basket; hinges squeaked, lids thudded, and the inner containers tinkled together. He quietly hoped to convey the full lunch onto the uphill strip before anything unfamiliar slid. Sandwiches, fruit, and a coil of napkins waited, yet space already felt tight, forks chiming whenever elbows brushed.
Gusts struck again; fabric flapped sharply and a hollow drone passed under the blanket like air inside a bottle. The dog lunged after a drifting leaf, leash twisting with sudden torsion that dragged the basket half a palm downhill. A round slice of cantaloupe, trimmed into a spiral, rolled free, humming against plastic before circling downhill like a pale nautilus. Reed snatched the fruit, but the motion knocked teaspoons, their ringing overlapping into a bright, stuttering chorus. Plates in the centre slid outward; if the wind picked up again, the stack of napkins would scatter beyond reach. Space shrank with every clink, and Paloma nudged aside two containers, cheeks puffing from the effort of steady breathing. She tapped the blanket twice, signalling there was room for only the sandwiches and the water flasks.
Accepting the hint, Reed returned the fruit, spare sauces, and extra plates to the basket. He let the broad lid lean firmly against the taut leash as a makeshift shield. The terrier quieted, nose brushing the rim, producing soft snorts that filled the brief silence between distant bicycle bells. Paloma poured juice; the narrow stream sang against plastic, then faded once the cups were half-filled. Together they slid the two plates onto the uphill strip, edges clicking once against the stone peg and staying put. Around them, the greenhouse pings softened and the flapping cloth eased into a low ripple. A lone grape circled once, bumped Reed’s wrist, and came to rest against the cool shadow creeping across the downhill corner.
Translation
