English Original
Gwen slid the rolling pin toward the far edge of the table, chasing the last hump of clay flat. She planned to press three tidy rows of the black bear stamp before the surface lost its workable softness. First attempt: paws sank shallow, and a ridge bulged beside the pattern like a tipped deck chair. She had noticed that darker patch earlier; if the clay were equal, the stroke would already be perfect. After wiping the handle, she let her fingers stretch out, then lifted the bottle and sent two gentle mists across. Moisture darkened the clay in scattered freckles, but the stubborn center still glimmered, resisting like wound torsion in wood. Her knuckles hovered above the slab; she could see progress, yet the full depth remained beyond the two light sprays. A quiet classmate at the shelf slowly compared rosette handles alone, gently tapping each one against his sleeve.
While Gwen reached for the border stamp, the rolling pin, left near the higher corner, began a slow sway downhill. The slight table tilt nudged it into the damp cloth, folding cotton over the bowl’s rim. Water lapped once, then spilled in a narrow amber ribbon that trickled along the grain between dried clay specks. Gwen returned, saw the unexpected pool, and added a third measured spray to balance moisture at the slab’s far edge. The earlier mists and fresh pool tipped the balance; the clay yielded in one soft, even sigh beneath the black bear. Before the ribbon could flood more, she pressed a sponge beside it, the fibers drinking the extra liquid at once. Her shoulders eased when the final impression stood level, but droplets slid past the sponge toward the edge. They rolled over dried crumbs and dropped into the drain, which answered with a long gurgle.
Translation
