Steam from a flask of aromatic tea drifted upward, mixing with the dusty sage smell that hovered beside the hillside trail. Nessa balanced her flask on a flat boulder, then tapped the first fist-sized stone against the rock face; a chalky scent broke free, almost metallic. Five stones—no more, no less—would match the marker cairn at the bend, so that became her clear goal. Valen, her older cousin, knelt nearby while Joelle tightened boot laces a few paces off. A mottled lizard watched the children from a warm patch of gravel. Nessa had already tested two flattish pieces: one pale tan, one rusty red. Each clacked into place, yet their combined height barely reached her wrist. “Wind’s picking up,” Valen said, his voice carrying the dry earth taste of airborne grit. They needed three more stones, each slightly thinner, or the column would topple.
Valen crossed to the scrub hedge gap and lifted a grey disc that smelled of damp clay on its shaded side. Placed on the stack, it tipped, then settled; the lizard’s tail twitched, scattering peppery dust. Now three layers stood, but the center of gravity leaned downhill. Nessa hunted along the margin until quartz flecks flashed—a dreamy swirl of blue and white crusted with orange lichen. When she flipped it, cool earthy moisture coated her fingertips like fine flour. That fourth stone sat sturdily, yet gusts returned, and the growing tower wobbled. A surprise came as the lizard darted beneath the half-built cairn, its sudden dash shaking loose a pebble that Nessa had not noticed. The column listed; Valen caught it with an affectionate nudge of his palm, preventing collapse. Only one untouched candidate remained on the sorting boulder: a thin shard shimmering with rainbow colors when sunlight struck its wet underside. Together they lowered it onto the peak. The moment it touched, the five-stone pile clicked into stillness, and the last spare piece on the boulder slid over the edge, leaving the surface empty.
Translation
