Foam slides up the flat sand.

Wind drifts.

Alma stops near rough driftwood.

A dull lava rock sits beside it.

A shallow crater dents the rock.

Old scratches cross its dark face.

The hot sun warms the stone.

The air carries a faint salty smell.

A dark boundary divides wet and dry sand.

Alma watches, silent.

Near her, shells slide from a tipped bucket.

They clink and spin.

Alma counts the bright shells.

Another slide breaks her count.

She waits until they settle.

Fenna crouches and waves.

"Hi, Alma," she calls.

Alma nods and looks lower.

A small hole lies by her toes.

Water creeps toward the hole; the walls stay dry.

Foam lifts, pauses, then slips away.

The crater rock now glints under rising light.

A bright crab scuttles between the shells.
