A bright sunbeam slides across the thick rug. Poppy blinks at the light. She kneels by the low shelf. A narrow gap sits between books. She leans and looks through it. Dust specks dance inside the ray. Dust floats. A small glue bottle lies beyond, cap tilted. She studies the clear liquid stuck inside. The plastic shines slowly.

She stands and walks to the window. The glass feels warm. The outside trees sway softly. Glare from the glue bottle hides the yard. Poppy sidesteps left. The glare slips away. Now she sees a grey cat on the fence. Her eyes widen. A grown-up calls, “Breakfast time!” The short message drifts from the bright hallway. Footsteps tap again and fade.
