Of the six paper cups, three already brimmed with tart lemonade, and the others waited upright beside the sweating flask. Wade had packed eight cups at home, expecting room for drinks and fruit that afternoon. Wade crouched on the uphill edge of the chequered cloth and breathed in the sweet-grass scent rising through the weave. Fried onion aroma drifted from the basket, mixing with the sharp citrus vapour escaping the freshly poured drink. A mild buttery note rolled from sliced bread, and a faint metallic tang rose where cutlery tapped together. The dog at his knee puffed warm, biscuit-smelling breath while its leash rattled against wicker. Pia sat in a loose squat at the centre flat, sliding plastic forks into a stack. Her fingers carried the peppery smell of rocket leaves she had recently arranged beside them. Their plan remained simple: four plates for sandwiches, two more for fruit, all spread before sunlight softened the cheese. The blanket still offered plenty of space, and clean plates lined the wind-side edge like pale petals.
A gust arrived with a damp, earthy smell from the grass border, lifting the middle section of cloth. Two empty plates rocked, rolled along the hidden ridge, and tumbled into the downhill corner, landing face down in soil. Wade lunged forward, yet the dog bolted after a dust-flecked squirrel, jerking the basket and loosening its ripe, peachy fragrance. One sliced peach slid free, its sugary perfume tracing a sticky path downhill across the cloth. Only four clean plates now remained, and lemonade had splashed over one, leaving a sharp lemon scent. Pia glanced downhill and said, “Wind picked up again, things keep sliding toward our feet.” Sharing everything sounded like an intriguing concept, so Wade abandoned the scattered plates and focused on saving space. He steadied the basket and unhooked the leash to redirect it around his shoe carefully. Then he pressed a square of quilted fabric napkin against the slope as a barrier. Pia gathered the final plate, stacked sandwiches onto it, and nestled the load behind the raised basket lid. Warm cheese mixed with cool lemonade vapour, and the dog settled, nose twitching at the trapped aroma.
Translation
