The hole had been narrowed by a crust of dried pigment, so Eli scraped the rim with a twig snapped from the grass. A steadier stream followed, thicker than before, and the pendulum traced a bold semicircle overlapping earlier variegated bands. The sudden weight tugged the stretched string lower, letting the next swing land off-centre and pool near the sheet’s left edge. Paint crept outward, slipped beneath the lifted corner stone, and a streak of violet hurried under the paper like quick rain. Paint met hidden grass veins, then burst through tiny gaps, sending amber drops across an untouched patch. Eli darted sideways and pressed the stone fully onto the corner, stopping the slide while the arc still thickened behind him. The cascade paused; glossy lines settled into a gentle curve, the tripod standing jagged but steady.

By evening, long shadows of the fence stretched across the sheet, and every droplet had turned from wet gleam to soft matte. Dusty gold light rested on the steadfast stone that pinned the corner, holding the paper completely flat against the grass.
