No chatter bounced off the rafters when Kit stepped into the print shop that morning. A hound lifted its head beneath the etching bench, nails tapping once against the floorboards. The absence of voices let every hinge, scrape, and distant drip take on a kind of reverence. Outside, muffled merriment drifted from the summer fair beyond the brick wall, yet none of it crawled through the high windows. Kit laid a palm on the bench and waited, letting the wood’s faint hum settle into his slow breathing rhythm. A quiet loyalty rested in the way each tool stayed exactly where yesterday had left it.
He selected the bluntest stylus; its tip made a shy tick when it kissed the copper plate hidden under the dark wax. Yesterday’s feathery skyline already stretched across the top edge, so today he tried to integrate bolder strokes that would ground the scene. Each new line arrived with a crisp scratch followed by a softer sigh as the wax ribbon curled and fell. Midway through a sweeping curve, the stylus snagged on a faint seam, halting his hand in mid-air. He lifted the tool, breathed once, then set it down lighter, letting the curve continue but now broken into two gentle beats. The change altered the rhythm of the bench; even the hound’s ears twitched at the shifted cadence of metal on wood.
Gwen appeared, lifted the plate with gloved hands, and carried it to the glass-walled bath; water swished, acid hissed, and Kit watched the exposed lines darken. While he waited, he traced the bench surface and noticed a narrow groove he had never seen, running exactly where his curve had faltered. The wood granted no explanation; the mark simply rested there, quiet, as if recording someone else’s forgotten movement. A low clunk signaled Gwen’s return, the plate now stripped of wax and ringing faintly as it met the bench. Ink rolled over copper with a wet hush, settling into the grooves that mirrored every decision, hesitation, and accident. When the press handle turned, gears muttered inside the iron frame, and a sheet of damp paper surrendered to the roller’s weight.
Peeling the paper free revealed the skyline in mirror against the cream of the damp sheet. Lower down, the paused curve and the unnoticed groove had joined, shaping the quiet outline of a hound. Kit’s fingers hovered above the fresh ink, then dropped to his sides, uncertain whether that animal had belonged to his design or to the bench itself. Gwen only nodded, the gesture small enough to fit inside the settling hush around them. Somewhere behind the wall, the fair kept its bright merriment rolling, yet inside the shop the press wheel kept spinning a single slow revolution. Its fading hum hung in the timber arches long after every other sound had fallen still.
Translation
