English Original
"Tap that board."
Daphne bent near the floor of the low treehouse and pressed her ear against the warm grain. The afternoon breeze slipped through the window slats, carrying faint leaf hum that mixed with distant dog barks. When Blythe shifted her weight, a quick creak sprang from the center plank. A short echo followed under the platform. Daphne nodded; the loose sound returned every time someone crossed that spot.
"Maybe a wedge will stop it," Blythe offered. She lifted a slice of thin cork from the supply bucket and placed it beside the offending plank. They arranged extra tools around the spot. The neat circle looked like a small ceremony beside a sleepy patient. Daphne wanted to know whether the cork would change the plank’s resonance. She pressed the cork flat and asked for silence with a raised palm. Both girls took a moment to lean back and listen. Instead of fading, the creak turned into a dull rattle that travelled along the rail.
Orson’s head appeared at the ladder opening, eyebrows raised at the growing noise. "Sounding worse up here?" He stepped onto the platform, and the boards answered with a fresh pitch shift. The children did not discuss blame; they only watched the beam vibrate under Orson’s boots. Orson tapped the cork, then the wood. He tried to keep in mind the exact order of each new sound. Finally he slid the cork deeper, but the rattle stayed, now wrapped inside a low hum. Daphne wiped sawdust from her knees, leaving pale streaks on her jeans. The plank still answered every step with the same stubborn creak.
Translation
