Story Content
English Original
Keane tipped the tin watering can, and thick green plant food slid toward its spout. Beside him, Etta lifted a shallow tray of soapy water onto the warm tar roof. No drop spilled. Keane’s new glasses from the optician caught a square of sunlight. He nudged them higher before the liquid began to pour. A gentle arc left the can and landed in the first clay pot. Damp earth rose toward the rim. At the same time foamy water in Etta’s tray rocked back and forth. A light wind brushed its surface. Neither task hurried; each fluid found its own speed. A short-haired cat prowled near the parapet wall. Its paws stayed clear of both streams, yet its nose twitched at the moving scents. Etta called, "The glass still has dirt on the corner!"
Heat rose through the small pebbles under their shoes. A thin hiss came from bubbles bursting against the dark tar. Above, a gull circled; its shadow crossed the roof and disappeared. Keane paused and set the can down. He folded his legs in the only patch of shade. The slow drip still slipped from the spout, and he tried to meditate on it. The drip hit the tar, spread, and then seeped toward the tray. Etta kept wiping an old glass pane; soap suds gathered, slid, and fell in bright patches. The two lines of liquid crept closer without help, one clear and one green. Both moved along the uneven slope near the center drain.
The first drop of plant food reached the sheet of soap at mid roof. Colors swirled together, drawing an emerald spiral across the surface. Etta’s cloth stopped mid-stroke; Keane’s shoulders relaxed while he watched the tiny whirlpool spin. The cat stepped back but remained on its spot, tail high. Fresh bubbles carried green streaks toward the drain and continued outward in new circles.
Two damp marks, cloth and can, sat side by side around the spiral. Keane tapped the can with one finger, and a final bead slipped from the spout.
Translation
