Story Content
English Original
A bare bulb above the doorway hummed, its yellow circle wobbling over damp tiles.
Tatum stood beside the low basin while Waverly swirled hot water across a faded tablecloth. Steam wrapped their shoulders and left tiny drops on Tatum’s wrists like cool glass beads. The tablecloth showed a stitched mansion, its roof thread now dark and heavy with moisture. He folded the cloth into a neat square and pressed each corner once. Then he placed it on the wooden bench near the small window. Two clotheslines crossed the ceiling, already crowded with socks and thin shirts. The hanging shirts formed a loose bridge between the lines and swung whenever steam rose. Soapy scent mixed with pale haze, blurring the patterned tiles for a slow moment.
Waverly dipped another towel and squeezed it hard, water running back into the basin. She spoke and held out her steady palm for the dry towel. Tatum passed it over, feeling the drop in weight from soaked cotton to dry fluff. He turned again toward the shelf as hot water breathed upward and ballooned the hanging sheet. The rising fabric brushed the present, which tipped, slid along wood, and fell into lukewarm water. Wrapping soaked through at once, and a funny painted wooden fish peeked from the torn side. Tatum lifted the soggy box and set it near the window, where cooler air slowed the drip. He left the sheet hanging halfway, its damp edge still touching the rim of the basin. Then he grabbed the cool brass scoop beside the tap and tilted it under the buzzing bulb. A silver drop slid along the handle while he watched its slow travel toward his thumb.
Translation
