Story Content
English Original
Soap bubbles drifted above the basin and one burst on Josie's cheek. "Did that bubble escape the spoon?" she called. Warm steam hung under the low lamp, and scattered droplets ticked against the copper tap. Light from the small window painted the damp tiles with a faint silver stripe.
On the folding table, Josie stacked small towels into neat squares. Each new towel pressed the pile flatter until its edges formed a straight tower. A tiny moth, the only pest in the room, circled the lamp without causing fuss on the table. It swooped lower once, brushed Josie's elbow, then returned to buzz around the warm glass. Water sloshed against the sturdy wooden basin wall in slow, regular beats that filled the room. Beside the basin, Sara swished a sheet through cloudy water. Soap flakes were the only ingredient in the tub. They raised a thick topping of foam that shimmered along the rim. During a brief hesitation, Sara squeezed the sheet once more, then swung it toward the waiting line.
Momentum carried one damp corner wider than Sara expected. The heavy cloth brushed the towel tower, sliding the top square off the stack. It dropped, struck the tile, and sent water outward in a quick splash that spotted Josie's shoes. At the same moment, the sheet's corner picked up a pale lint mark from the fallen towel. It then settled onto the line still dripping. Josie stooped, flicked the wet towel twice, and tucked it under her arm. She shifted the remaining pile away from the edge. Then she lifted a fresh dry square and folded its corners together.
Translation
