English Original
From the doorway, Ivan watched the artisan rock a zinc channel and press a green glass piece until a neat click answered the motion.
The press lingered, eased, returned; each change in weight shifted the seat of the edge, and the tiny mechanism of fit announced itself.
A brush swept grinding residue into a tray on the side table, and the cadence of clicks and pauses steadied the room.
On the wall, half-built panels marked stages, rows stepping from bare frame to near-complete, while hands at the adjacent station moved in tempo.
He stayed still, counting the interval between press and release, his fingers pressing the doorframe in time.
Clouds drifted past the tall window in slow ranks, and the workshop’s light pulsed from muted to bright with unhurried regularity.
When sun cleared, colour patches leaped onto the tracing paper, confetti in orderly scatter, each thrown by a piece lying near the paper’s edge.
Two beams overlapped and gradated from amber to soft teal across a numbered square, a third colour existing nowhere in the glass, only in their meeting.
Pigment sat trapped inside thicker hues, and their weight pressed firmer into the palm than the paler, thinner panes.
Clips held the tracing paper taut, so every projected shape held its place through each dim-bright measure.
Ivan stepped in and set a blue trapezoid into a waiting channel; the seat answered with a low tap, not a click.
He rocked the piece with his thumb and felt it rattle against zinc, small enough to move inside its H-shaped track when he breathed.
The putty in its tub pressed back, still cool; he worked a pea into his palm until it yielded.
A voice from the adjacent station said, "It's bright now," and smoke from rosin thinned in a lazy thread over there.
Ivan paused over two near-matching blues, one gradated along its long edge and one even, then nudged the patterned one aside and stayed with simple.
He lifted the even blue toward the window, and the street outside shifted through its thickness, straight lines bending as if waves passed.
A heavier green cast its circle beside it, and where both touched the paper, a calm teal confirmed their joint existence.
He tilted the blue a fraction, and the piece in the channel answered with a quick click, though his fingers had not pressed.
He set the lifted pane down, wiped the zinc inner lip with the corner of the paper, and tried the angle rather than the force.
His forearm loosened, and the rhythm changed; press, breathe, release, wait for the seat to speak only once.
He glanced at the floor of colour patches, now slowed by a passing cloud, and his hands matched the longer interval.
A breath later, he pressed the blue again, not straight down but from the corner toward the inner lip he had wiped.
The paper under the frame held firm in its clips, the panel’s weight settling evenly, and the faint rattle inside fell quiet.
"Here," he said, handing back the brush, then set both palms on the frame and drew a steadier line.
He pressed the blue once more, slower this time and from the side, and the edge seated with a smaller click against the cool zinc.
Translation
Vocabulary in Context
- gradate
“Across the numbered square, the overlapped beams gradated from amber toward a quiet teal that lived only in their crossing.”
- existence
“Their meeting declared a third color, its existence born of light between panes, not of anything locked within glass.”
- pigment
“Pigment lay sealed in the heavier glass, and its packed color made the pane sit weightier in his palm.”
- confetti
“When sun cleared, color shards jumped on the tracing paper like confetti, yet each patch kept its tidy place.”
- taut
“The clips kept the tracing paper taut, so every thrown shape held still through each slow bright-dim measure.”
