Dana stands by the fence rail.
The father stands by her.
Damp earth smells near the gate.
She looks for wet marks.
Hands press rough rail; a pale ring marks wood.
By the gate, a deep hoof print holds mud.
A tiny flower grows by the path.
The sunny glare hides the bowl patch.
Dana crouches and tilts her head.
She lifts one hand for shade.
"A round mark here," he says.
A small feather drops into the water.
A little whirl spins at the center.
Ripples slide to the stone edge.
On the flat stone, a wet patch sits.
A juice box rests in the backpack.
Chickens peck gravel along the path.
The wet patch slowly shrinks in the sun.
