A teacup clinks in the hall.
Clean laundry smells near the door.
Light from the window slides in.
Wade kneels on the rug.
His palms press the thick pile.
A shoe dent rests beside his knee.
In the next room, the aunt writes at a desk.
Her pen moves on a notebook.
He reaches for a thin book.
Its neighbors join tight.
The bare wood edge rubs his knuckle.
He slides a round block in.
It opens a small gap.
He pulls the blue cover.
The block slips and rolls into the sunbeam.
It circles once.
His hand makes a shadow.
He lifts one corner and wiggles.
The book comes free.
He opens to a dream night.
He sets the book on his knees.
He lets the block lie in the sun.
He slides it back to join the row.
The aunt says, "Good morning, Wade."
From the cup, a pencil taps.
