Neal at the Garden Shed-

English 原文
Neal adjusted the rolled sketches under his arm while a breeze rattled bean trellises along the allotment path. The local heritage fair opened at noon, and as temporary curator for the craft wing he aimed to collect an iron weather vane promised by a gardener. Drizzle heaped beads onto rosemary leaves, and peat clung to his shoes. Ahead, the narrow gravel lane forked around raised beds where volunteers dragged sacks of compost. Their wheelbarrow tilted, scattering damp straw across the stones; his steps slowed while boots searched for clear footing. The small delay pressed minutes forward, and clouds thickened until the fairground marquee lamps flickered pale amber behind the hedge.
He turned left at the fork, expecting a shortcut, and reached a weather-worn garden shed tucked behind sprawling pumpkin vines. A padlock dangled open, perhaps forgotten in the morning rush. Inside, lamplight bounced off a multifaceted glass sphere mounted on a plinth. The object caught his breath; it dwarfed the vane he intended to retrieve and looked disproportionate to the modest shed, its mirrored planes tilting rainbows onto cobwebbed rafters. Earlier in the week he had dispatched a formal memo requesting unused pieces for display, yet he had never heard of this sculpture. Dust rose as he circled it, and barn spiders retreated into knotty corners. Outside, the volunteers’ barrow wheels squeaked over gravel, sending soft vibrations through the timber walls.
A muffled clatter followed those vibrations; a cracked jar toppled from a high shelf and shattered against the plinth’s base. Shards skated under the door gap, glinting like spilled ice. The sudden noise drew three volunteers who appeared at the doorway, wet gloves hanging from their belts. Their arrival added weight to the narrow floorboards, and the sphere shifted with a groan, revealing a hidden hinge along the rear wall. Neal’s hand pressed against the glass, steadying it just as the wall panel swung outward. Daylight flooded the cavity, striking the sphere so that hundreds of tiny suns danced across the adjoining compost heap. Children outside whooped at the new light show; passers-by paused, cameras lifted, and chatter rolled along the row of stalls. The weather vane mission quietly dissolved as the shed itself became an impromptu exhibit, visitors flowing around pumpkins and straw to watch luminous patterns swim over wet soil. Late sunlight rested across the mosaic surfaces inside the opened shed.
