Her first observation showed the latch trapped under a bent screw, yet her deliberate tug failed to lift it. She fetched a broken twig, slid it under the metal tongue, and levered upward. The twig snapped, echoing like a tiny firecracker. Two more tries left fresh scratches in the paint and no movement at all.

While she searched for a sturdier tool, a soft rustle slipped through the weeds. A sleek ferret darted past her boot, slipped between the bars, and vanished. Surprise widened her eyes, and she steadied the lens, ready for any quick scene. The creature’s slim body nudged the latch from the opposite side; the screw shifted just enough for the bar to drop. If she had pushed from that angle herself, the gate would have swung earlier.
