She has visited the place many times, yet the crowd that morning formed a moving wall. When the path narrowed near a street painter, her shoulder bag bounced against strangers. The sketchbook inside her bag nearly slipped free. A gust pushed paper scraps into the air. Above, an eagle circled, its wings broad against the pale sky. Time kept pressing; dancers would occupy the square soon, blocking every bench that faced the trees.

As Mila reached the grove, a sudden breeze flipped her first page, scattering charcoal dust. She set her bag down, but the wind returned, stronger than before. Her usual method—holding corners with her wrist—failed completely. She adjusted: she gathered three flat terrestrial stones from the shaded soil. She placed them along the edges, yet one stubborn corner still snapped upward. One corner was pinned under a pebble, yet the opposite side lifted again. At that instant, the circling eagle released a single feather. It drifted, twisted, and landed beside her knee. She slid the feather through the sketchbook’s spiral wire; the soft quill pressed the page neatly. The wind eased, crowd sounds faded behind trunks, and her pencil moved.
