English 原文

Milo reached the old harbor just after dawn, gripping a folded stool and a battered sketchbook. He had spent the morning sharpening pencils for the enormous whale painted somewhere in the maze of brick alleys. Travel had filled his summer, yet whispers about this mural kept arriving in conversation, so he returned to his hometown. At the first crossroads he paused to greet an early fisherman whose boots clacked on wet stones. If Milo had known the alley would twist so sharply, he would have packed a wider lens for reference photographs, but he pressed on. A blind corner waited ahead, hiding both the sea and the elusive wall.

As he turned, a delivery truck rumbled beside the blind corner and stopped exactly in front of the only broad wall in sight. The whale might have floated behind that metal box, yet thick crates were being unloaded, each marked for distant cafés. The walls had been washed by last night’s rain, so charcoal would smear easily; Milo retreated and tested markers instead. When the truck finally sputtered away, sunlight ricocheted from a broken pane straight into his eyes, erasing the outline he tried to trace. He climbed a stack of pallets for a higher angle, but gulls flapped nearby and startled him; his first sheet drifted into a puddle, its content spreading like grey clouds.

A rhythmic creak echoed from inside the building; a sliding door rolled open as workers arrived, and half a tail swept sideways with it. The two doors never stayed closed at once, so only fragments of blue skin showed at any moment. Milo waited until both panels aligned, then settled his stool where dripping gutters could not reach. The doors touched, and the whale appeared whole for only a breath, mouth wide as if to greet passing ships. Milo sketched in quick strokes, eyes darting between paper and paint until the workers pulled the panels apart again. Wet ink shivered on the page, yet the image remained clear. Sunlight rested on the freshly finished sketch.
