Maya had promised her cousin she would return a small bag of glass marbles. Yet the bag had vanished from every cupboard upstairs. Holding a torch, she pushed open the basement door and crept down the wooden steps. Thin dust lifted around her boots, and humming came from an old vacuum leaning against the wall. Its plastic hose lay coiled across the floor like a sleeping snake. Wooden shelves crowded the narrow room. A low pipe, which had been repaired with tape, dripped softly near the drain. Maya has searched many dark corners before, but this maze felt tighter. When a striped kitten squeezed through the railing and darted ahead, the steps under her toes wobbled.

Maya steadied herself by gripping the vacuum’s handle, but the kitten knocked a cardboard box from a shelf. The box tumbled, scattering seashells and a dull gray stone that cracked as it hit the concrete. Inside the split surface, a spiral pattern glimmered. She crouched, brushed away fragments, and realized the stone held a fossil of a tiny sea creature. Her marbles could wait; this find needed gentle care. She slid the fossil into an empty jar and padded it with soft cloth. Then she followed the kitten back toward the stairs. The humming from the vacuum faded behind her, and water from the hose gathered in a slow, shallow puddle. Upstairs, afternoon light spread across the kitchen table as she placed the jar beside the sleeping kitten.
