English 原文
Mira stepped through the zoo gate just after noon, a charcoal pencil balanced behind one ear. She had practiced drawing animals for weeks, yet the contest sheet still lay blank inside her sketchbook. Today her single objective stood clear: capture a zebra’s restless stripes before the light shifted. Her companion Leo carried a folding stool and a small flask, trailing three steps behind her. A warning rope had been stretched between visitors and the low fence, and the air smelled of cut grass while distant parrots flashed bright wings above the cages.
They reached the enclosure, but the zebra paced from shade to sunshine, changing direction whenever Mira adjusted her page. She knelt, hoping to focus on one repeated pattern; a gust flipped the paper, smearing charcoal across the muzzle she had finished. If the stall had stayed open, she would have bought another pencil, yet the shutter already rattled down. When Leo set the stool on uneven gravel, one leg sank, tilting the seat and scattering crumbs from his pocket toward curious sparrows. Mira’s fingers tightened around the book; her first attempt had been overcome by wind, the second by wobbling ground.
While she wiped the page with the edge of her sleeve, a shallow puddle near the fence caught a mirrored band of black and white. The surface trembled each time the animal stepped, but the reflection lingered longer than the moving body. Mira shifted her position, letting the rope press against her elbow for balance, and sketched the upside-down image instead of the living model. The ripples softened hard edges, turning strict lines into a rhythm she had never noticed. Charcoal moved quickly now; valuable minutes gathered inside each stroke before clouds thickened above the park. She signed the corner just as the zebra wandered behind a tree. The finished sketch lay beside the rippled puddle.
