She had planned to capture the evening landscape before the sun dropped behind the dark pines. The distant ridge had been carved by forgotten glaciers, and its blue shape shifted each minute in the sinking light. Every few strokes, bubbles tapped the metal, reminding her that dinner threatened to overtake art. With her free hand she sprinkled seasoning across the surface; specks danced, then disappeared. The small moment cost her another color, because the sky’s pale orange slid toward grey.

A gust lifted the page, smearing fresh charcoal; gravity pull stretched the sheet, then snapped it against her knuckles. She set the sketchbook flat, yet the wind returned, this time throwing spicy droplets from the saucepan onto the picture. If the wind had eased even for a minute, she might have finished sooner. Jade dragged a heavier rock beside the stove, anchoring the paper beneath its rough weight. When bubbles rose again, she slid the saucepan to a cooler ring, but the flame sputtered and refused to stay even. She had nearly snapped the sketchbook shut, thinking the painting was lost. A sudden pop sent a curve of broth across the margin in a perfect crescent.

The mark glowed darker than her pencil lines, showing the missing shadow on the mountain slope. Jade copied the curve inside the drawing, then dabbed the real spill with a corner of cloth before it dried. The landscape on the page tightened into balance; light from the stove brightened the ridges while cooler tones settled in the valleys. Steam quietened around the stove, and only a dull hiss reached her ears. She twisted the burner closed, lifted the lid, and watched calm liquid circle the vegetables. The finished sketch rested gently beside the cooling saucepan on the flat rock.
