English 原文
The morning air carried faint mist through the iron gate of the city arboretum, and dew clung to railings until pale sunshine lifted it. By a shallow fountain, water tapped stone with gentle rhythm; the sound slipped under broad tree canopies and disappeared into distance. Leo, a visiting naturalist, adjusted the strap of his camera and unfolded a creased sketch. He had studied the layout during the train ride, learning that the arboretum’s delicate ecosystem included a rare ground orchid that occasionally lifted pale heads near an overgrown area behind the glasshouse. Because rain had been scarce all summer, the orchid’s brief bloom would finish soon, and Leo wanted a clear photograph before the petals closed.
He followed a narrow path, yet blackberry vines sprawled across it and thorns caught his sleeve. The original route had been mapped decades earlier, but many signs had been buried under ivy, so each corner felt uncertain. Leo crouched, tried sliding beneath a branch, but a sudden gust blew grit onto his lens, leaving blurred spots across the glass. After the lens was carefully wiped, the shutter jammed; sand had been drawn inside when the cap loosened. He restarted the mechanism, then pressed on. When he reached the numbered bed, only wilted stalks remained; the blossom was gone. Shoulders lowered, he stepped back toward the main path, scanning ground and trunks for a new hint.
Near the entrance he paused; a fallen sparrow feather lay against moss, aligned with a strip of shade beside a disused bench. Light filtered there at a different angle, and a faint splash of white glimmered behind reeds. Leo knelt; the orchid stood fresh and open, sheltered by stalks that had been bent by yesterday’s wind. Seeds had been carried beyond the bed, creating a miniature echo of the wider ecosystem in that forgotten corner. If Leo had trusted the old map alone, the bloom would have remained unseen. He framed the shot, pressed the shutter, and the camera clicked without resistance. Light rested on the broad leaves beside the quiet gate.
