Mira Before the Screen Flickered-

English 原文
Mira balanced a substantial stack of notebooks against her hip while weaving through the campus hall. At the top of the pile lay her personal compendium of hand-drawn fern diagrams, pages trimmed with green ink. A narrow side door promised a shorter route to the small auditorium, yet its brass knob slipped in her palm, refusing the first turn. After a firmer twist, the latch clicked, and a burst of stale air met her steps. Rows of empty chairs waited beyond, their metal frames echoing as she hurried toward the front table.
A power cable curled across the aisle like a sleeping rope. Her boot caught it; the stack tilted, and paper rustled down the slope of her coat. The compendium slid farther, skidding beneath the projection cart. She knelt, fingertips grazing dust, while the sound of arriving students thickened the room. Overhead, the ceiling fans whirred, scattering the hush usually claimed by anticipation. The visiting instructor entered from the main doors, rolling a small suitcase of lenses. He centered himself behind the lectern, unaware that Mira crouched in shadow, coaxing her book back into daylight.
The instructor tapped his remote. Nothing appeared on the screen. He tried again; still darkness. Removing the lens cap made no difference. He leaned forward, confusion bending his posture. Beneath the cart, Mira’s palm brushed a loose plug; the cable snapped into its socket, and the projector woke with a soft thrum. An unintended slide filled the screen—her fern sketches, magnified so vein patterns resembled river deltas. Gasps rose, turning the scattered chatter into focused breath. Recognition flowed through the audience in silence broken only by shutters of phone cameras. Mira froze, one knee on the floor, the errant compendium half-open beside her boot.
Instead of closing the image, the instructor adjusted the focus wheel, sharpening every line. He raised an eyebrow toward Mira, now standing with dust on her skirt and the rescued volume pressed to her chest. Without a word, he stepped aside, allowing the drawing to remain while he prepared his own presentation in the background. Chairs squeaked as listeners leaned forward; a few switched notebook pages, pens hovering. Mira eased into the nearest seat, pages still warm between her fingers.
The blank wall behind the podium held a faint square of cooling light.
