Morning light spilled across the school entrance, carrying a faint promise of spring. Lina stepped inside with a cardboard box that smelled of warm blueberries. She had baked the muffins before dawn, and she dreamed all night that her friend Maya would bite into one and laugh. The first bell had not rung yet, yet the corridor was already crowded. Backpacks knocked against her elbows, and the doorway to their classroom was blocked by chatting students. Lina shifted the box to her hip, but the flow of bodies pushed her backward. Time slipped by, and she wondered if the surprise would fail before it even began.

Instead of waiting, she turned toward a narrow service corridor that curved behind the gym. The floor there was clear, but the route climbed a metal stairway. Lina moved slowly to keep the muffins steady. Halfway up, a sudden sneeze startled her; the box tilted, and one golden cake rolled out, bounced, and landed on the next step. A boy from the art club scooped it up and smiled. “Here,” he said, setting it back. His quick laugh broke the tension, and relief rushed through Lina like a small gust. Together they reached the classroom just as the bell rang. Lina placed the box on Maya’s desk, and the boy gave her a friendly hug as blueberry scent drifted over the rows of chairs.
