She wanted a clear view of one canvas from the extensive nineteenth-century collection: a seascape rumored to hide small changes each time it was examined. Afternoon light spilled through a tall window, but a heavy crimson curtain absorbed most of it and left the water in the painting dull. When Lina dragged the curtain aside, the rod jammed, and dust drifted across her face, forcing her to blink and step back.

She had already missed perfect light once, and, if she had known the curtain would stick again, she would have borrowed a portable lamp. Instead, she moved a bronze floor lamp from another corner, yet its narrow beam only warmed the gilded frame and deepened the shadows on the sea. She tried raising the lamp on a stool; the base wobbled, and the bulb flickered out. A relieved hiss escaped when she twisted the bulb tighter, but the glare still bounced from the glass and pleased the eye more than her page, making details hard to catch. The discovery had been documented by hurried photographs before the evening lights dimmed, and her sketch finally captured every careful brushstroke.
