A narrow awning had been stretched from the bakery wall earlier that morning, and ribbons already swayed beneath it, but the highest hook waited bare.

Milo climbed and tried to loop thin cord through the metal ring. Wind from the passing dark cloud rocked the ladder, and the cord slipped from his fingers, brushing Clara’s cheek before falling. If Milo had measured the rope earlier, they would have saved several tries; instead, the distance forced him to knot two shorter pieces in the air. The stall had been decorated with fresh cakes, so the baker pushed a tray outward, limiting Clara’s space. She stepped back, her shoe skidding on wet stone, yet her arms stayed raised, keeping the lantern dry beneath the awning.

On the third attempt the knot finally caught, but another gust twisted the lantern shut like a clam. Clara pressed the paper edges, searching for their proper shape, when a thin ray escaped through the broken cloud layer. Sunlight struck the lantern just as it opened, and hidden foil panels flashed orange and gold across the lane. Shoppers paused; droplets on ribbons flickered, and the baker’s window reflected sudden color. Milo tightened the cord once more, then climbed down, water rolling from his jacket. The drizzle eased, and faint steam curled from the stones near their feet. Bright patterns lay steady against the paling sky.
