Morning haze still clung to the glass when Milo stepped into the long greenhouse behind the school. He had already noticed a thin layer of mildew spreading across the seed trays, so opening the roof windows became his immediate target. Warm air would escape, and the young lettuce could flourish within a cooler breeze. A tight lattice of wooden beams formed a visible support network above his head, yet several bolts clicked against each other whenever wind shook the structure. At the center, a rusted drive change lever jutted from an old ventilation fan; its gears had been installed decades earlier by a caretaker now forgotten. Milo wrapped both hands around the lever and pulled. The handle refused to move. His shoulders tightened; a shrill squeak drifted through the rafters, but nothing else shifted. He released the metal and rubbed spots of rust from his palms onto his jeans.

Determined, Milo searched for another angle. A cracked stool stood under the gutter, and he dragged it across wet concrete. When he climbed, the stool wobbled; splinters pressed through his jacket sleeve, yet the added height let him inspect a corroded hinge. The hinge had been fixed with soft wire, which now twisted loose under his screwdriver. He pushed again, but wind slapped the pane downward, blocking the opening once more. If he had noticed the cracked gear earlier, the repair would have finished sooner, yet the stubborn mechanism forced another route. He tied rope to a hanging basket, looped it around the lever, and kicked the stool away. The basket dropped; its weight and his pull acted as a joint effort of wood and rope. Metal ground against metal; then the lever slid, and every upper window lifted together. A burst of stale air rolled out, carrying damp dust that settled over nearby leaves. Milo watched his boot sink into soft soil, leaving a lasting impact shaped like a shallow pool. Droplets cooled on his neck while sunlight rested on the damp boards.
