English 原文
Late afternoon light slanted across the rooftop terrace while the hustle and bustle of the street drifted upward. Milo balanced a narrow plank between two bricks; he needed a steady seat for tonight’s vigil as an eager stargazer. The old bench nearby offered a firmer base, yet several planks had been warped by rain and time. Paint flakes fluttered onto cracked tiles, and a rusty hinge squeaked whenever the wind nudged the lid of a forgotten toolbox. Milo had planned the evening for weeks, certain the meteor shower would cross directly above the building’s chimney.
He pulled a screwdriver from the box, but the first screw crumbled, leaving metal dust under his palm. A second attempt with a thicker screw slipped; the board tilted again, and the bench rocked against the wall. If Milo had brought new screws earlier, the job would have finished sooner. Searching for something sturdier, he lifted a weathered planter that once overflowed with star-shaped blooms. Only dry stalks remained; bees had visited every spring, and their quiet pollination had once painted the garden bright. Under the planter, a small glass jar rolled free; thick golden nectar coated its rim and released a faint wildflower smell. The scent carried on the breeze; a single bee landed, then another, wings humming above the loosened soil.
An idea flickered like the coming meteors; Milo dabbed nectar along the bench joints, setting each plank before the syrup cooled. Wood swelled slightly, closing gaps that nails could not tame, and the fresh sweetness tempted more bees toward the nearby flowers. Their busy movement dusted petals and stalks, and brighter color spread where gray had settled moments earlier. The final screw was tightened, its click marking the mechanical satisfaction of a tool completing its duty. When the sun dipped, Milo tested the bench; it stayed still, though faint wingbeats continued overhead. Above them, the repaired bench rested beneath the first glimmering star.
