English 原文
Thin fog softened the edges of the glass roof, and early sunlight slipped between wet leaves. Milo balanced on a wooden crate beside an old metal tank. Clara steadied the crate with one boot, drops sliding from her sleeve. Their goal sat clear: revive the silent irrigation lines. Rows of tomato plants, already showing abundance of green spheres, would drink again. The system had been installed years earlier. A copper valve had been welded to a rusted manifold, and a small pressure gauge leaned sideways under the joint. Milo twisted the valve. The needle refused to move, so he tapped the gauge; only a dull clink answered. He had already replaced one hose, yet water still refused to flow. Light glinted on the ladder, and he placed a foot on the lowest rung to gain a better view. He decided to ascend for a better look at the upper pipes.
From the higher vantage, he spotted a hairline crack along a welded seam. Clara handed up a wrench; its cold weight bumped his palm. When he tightened the nut, the manifold groaned, but the crack widened instead of closing. If Milo had tightened the joint earlier, the leak would have stayed small. Water sprayed sideways, drumming against panes, forcing Milo to duck. Clara laughed—a short burst that echoed among vines—while she darted toward the main valve. Her boot slipped on a plank, yet she caught the wheel and spun it. The sudden drop in pressure gave the gauge new life; its needle jumped, vibrated, then settled at a safe mark. Milo climbed down, wiped his cheek, and pushed a spare rubber sleeve over the crack. As the valve turned, a soft hiss marked the expansion of the main pipe. Once the clamp hugged the seam, he reopened the flow. A clear arc rose, fractured the sunbeam, and tiny colors danced above the plants. Water pooled under the dangling hose.
