English 原文
Layla set her trumpet case on the rehearsal room floor while Matteo unrolled two microphone cables. Afternoon light slanted through a high window; motes drifted among slow beats from a distant drum practice. Warm air inside the room carried a faint hint of varnish and polished metal. For the semester showcase, their school project asked for a live jazz recording. Layla, the only student musician with a brass instrument, wanted a clean take. A striped cat balanced on the windowsill, ears flicking at every metallic clink. During a brief discussion over cable length, Matteo kept the volume knob at a moderate level so speakers hummed rather than boomed.
The first attempt at recording faltered before the second measure even sounded. Layla lifted the trumpet, yet the cable knot tightened around the music stand and pulled the microphone sideways. By the time Matteo freed the knot, the cat had crossed the silent piano keys. Thin sheets of music scattered across the carpet and slipped beneath the heavy rug. Layla quickly gathered them, started again, and hit the opening bluesy phrase. A pop of static burst; the second microphone had been placed on a low stand too close to the wall. Matteo carefully shifted it outward, lifted two fingers in a quick signal, and recording resumed. Mid-solo, the cat sprang from the sill, paw landing on the suspended cymbal. The strike added a bright metallic zing that sliced through the room with unexpected zest.
They stopped together, their eyes fixed on the recorder’s steady blinking light. Matteo replayed the track; the cymbal accent slid neatly between trumpet phrases, sounding planned rather than accidental. If the cat had stayed asleep, they would have missed the sparkling accent that lifted the chorus. Layla nodded, reached over, and quickly saved the unexpected take as the final version. Outside the window, the cat settled once more, tail curled like a quiet question mark. The small digital recorder rested between two silent wooden speakers on the carpet.
