Morning light fell across the small yard.

Milo carried a wide bucket near the back door. Yesterday, school lessons on water conservation stayed in his thoughts. He wanted to improve the dry garden soil. Grey clouds gathered; steady rain followed soon. He placed the bucket under the loose metal gutter. First drops arrived, then quick rainfall drummed on the roof. Water splashed sideways, hitting a stack of empty crates. The top crate slid, struck the bucket, and tipped it. Mud spread along the narrow stone path.

Milo stepped back as water washed across his shoes. A brief concern tightened his brow when the bucket lay sideways. He pushed fallen crates aside with quick hands. Bricks rested near the steps, left from old work. He lifted two bricks and built a short base. The bucket stood on the base under the gutter edge. Rain fell harder, but the bucket stayed steady. Clear water collected fast, climbing almost to the rim. When the clouds thinned, he covered the bucket with a lid. Drops slowed, and quiet air rested over the yard. Milo carried the full bucket toward the flower bed. Leaves bent under the fresh pour.
