English 原文
The weekend market pressed against the river wall, awash with chatter and footsteps. Near a crate of brass spoons, Loren reached toward an ornate kaleidoscope, its enamel body painted with vines and tiny gold birds. At the same instant a gloved hand closed over the other end. The hand belonged to a quiet enthusiast in a checkered coat, who lifted the tube as though weighing a rare instrument. Their elbows knocked; the kaleidoscope wobbled between them while the stall’s rhythm of buyers flowed on, indifferent to the small struggle.
Loren adjusted her grip, turning the eyepiece. A harrowing scrape burst from the stiff hinge, louder than expected, and a few nearby heads tilted. When the tube finally twisted free, a rolled strip of paper slid out and drifted onto a velvet cloth. Both pairs of eyes widened. Crayon loops formed a sun, a house, and a crooked cat—the innocence of the drawing startled compared with the market’s tarnished metal and worn leather. For a heartbeat, neither person moved; the crowd kept shouldering past, jostling the table. The fallen tube rocked, threatening to drop, and the pair steadied it together. The tube’s emptiness created a visible quandary: without its hidden picture, was the object still worth their tug-of-war?
The enthusiast crouched first, lifting the paper toward the afternoon light. Colors on the crayon cat shimmered, as if the sun in the drawing still warmed the wax. Loren tilted the kaleidoscope toward the same light. Instead of the expected glass mosaic, the inner mirrors now reflected only pale brown wood; the colors had slipped away with the drawing. A rush of footsteps nudged her shoulder, and she nearly lost balance before the man steadied her. He placed the paper back into the tube; she eased the eyepiece until a soft click sounded. Both then set the kaleidoscope on the stall again, palms lingering a moment before withdrawing. A passing child noticed the bright vines, lifted the tube, and giggled when a swirl of reds and blues greeted his eye. The kaleidoscope rested between two dull brass candlesticks, its colors dimmed by settling dust.
