Sam wanted to walk his dog after sunset.

A working flashlight would throw light on the path near the river.

He shook the old light and nothing came out.

The small lightbulb inside looked grey and tired.

Sam opened a drawer to find a fresh bulb.

Cool air drifted through the open kitchen window.

He pulled Bella’s leash from a hook and waited.

Bella was his favorite pet with soft ears.

He set the flashlight on the table for repair.

The new bulb slipped from his fingers and rolled.

It bumped a stack of spoons, which rang like bells.

A spoon hit the switch, turning off the kitchen lamp.

Sudden darkness filled the room; Bella barked once.

Sam grabbed the flashlight and pressed its button by guess.

A weak glow still lived inside the old bulb.

He laughed, understanding the surprise came from loose wires.

He tightened them, and the glow grew strong again.

Bella wagged, and leash, flashlight, and kid moved outside.

The wooden door closed behind them.
