English 原文
Clara stepped onto the silent pier just after dawn, intent on lowering the old service platform so she could repaint the faded mark that showed last spring’s waterline. Bronze morning light touched the planks; a cool mist drifted above the river and left tiny beads on her sleeves. Below the pier, dark posts showed pale bands where earlier floods had bitten, a quiet calendar etched by wet seasons. She pulled the lever that had been designed to drop the platform, yet nothing moved. The chain hung slack, and the wheel refused to turn, as though the entire mechanism had grown stubborn overnight.
She crouched beside the frame and brushed away grit. The gears had been clogged by sand that summer storms had swept in, and several bolts were loose. If Clara had noticed the bent pin earlier, she would have saved time; instead, she searched the tool crate and wedged a thin stepping stone under the housing to lift the axle. The stone rocked once, but its hidden strength kept it firm while she hammered the pin straight. She tried the lever again, and this time the wheel inched forward before locking a second time, spraying rust flakes across her boots.
A deeper clank echoed under the boards, followed by a sudden splash. The sound came from beneath, not above: the counterweight had dropped itself free. Clara sprang back as the platform rose without help, driven by water pressure that had built while the chain stayed jammed. The surprise worked in her favor; the metal surface now hovered exactly level with the pier, steady and bright where the river had polished it clean. Rust flecks drifted as the platform rested steady above the fresh waterline.
