English 原文
The balance beam felt grainy beneath Dashiel’s palms, its rain-raised ridges pressing lines into his skin. He had come here many weekends, and the lock’s towpath, once a casual gathering place for picnics, looked familiar. While his parent settled onto the bench with a canal history leaflet, Dashiel set the windlass onto the upstream socket. The iron handle was cold and faintly sticky from old grease, yet it turned smoothly, and water began to swirl below. Rope creaked around a bollard; fallen leaves started to gather against the rising swirl like crumbs drifting toward a plughole. He had already raised both paddles, so the chamber water climbed steadily without further cranking.
While the chamber filled, he brushed fingers along the stone wall; slime beneath the algae band formed a thin soapy film. Near the ladder rungs lay a second windlass, half sunk in clay; Dashiel did not recall leaving it there. Dark marks on its shaft showed hurried use, and a fresh dent in the wooden beam above hinted someone had struck it. He crouched, touched the cool metal, and watched a water thread squeeze from the lower gate hinge, a drip unseen before. The boat inside tipped a finger’s width toward the towpath, prompting him to reassess the waterline stripes along the opposite wall.
A faint hum from the unclogged paddle declared the side where water still rushed freely; the quieter valve hid beneath silt. Dashiel lifted the heavy grease tin, warmed it between his palms, then smeared a little onto the stiff lift rod. Nothing shifted; he decided the stone ledge that should underpin the gate face now held packed clay, so the flow stayed uneven. Accepting the slow lean, he slackened the rope loop so the narrowboat could ride the tilted plane without scraping the wall. When the levels matched, he pushed the beam; wood moaned, water parted, and a tiny pale feather slipped in through the gap. A breeze spun it until it settled on his sleeve, a bright stray gift he carried while stepping off the beam.
