Between those echoes drifted a softer layer: riverweed smelled sweet, and faint engine hum faded behind warehouses. A raven studied him from the nearest post, head tilting at each movement. Without warning the bird dropped a shiny twig between the lanterns, and the added weight brought the string into perfect tension. Light cotton shades finally lifted, forming a neat rising arc above the canal. The raven rose and traced a small circle beyond smokestacks. A single black feather rested beside the lantern.
