Late sunlight skimmed across the deserted railway shed, touching peeling paint and shards of green glass. Dust hung between roof beams like slow-moving snow, and a faint iron smell drifted through gaps in the boards. Callum stopped at the doorway, a folded sketch clamped under one arm. He needed a clear view of the long interior wall. Rumour had said an old mural hid there. He wanted to scrutinize each faded stroke before the building vanished under new development. A rusted sliding door blocked the passage, its wheels locked in a crust showing years of silent transformation.

He pressed both hands against the handle, and the metal screeched once before refusing to slide farther. His fingers slipped on rust flakes, so he searched the littered floor for anything that might provide leverage. A splintered plank lay near a broken crate and, when wedged into the gap, acted as a bar. Even so, the door crawled only a finger’s width, and dust lifted then settled in the dim air again. If he had brought oil, the wheels would have turned with less protest, but time offered no such mercy today. He straightened, rolled his shoulders, and gathered courage before hammering the wheel rims with the plank’s blunt end. On the next heave the door shuddered along the rail, sending rust fragments pattering across the concrete like dry rain.

The sudden space behind the door exhaled cool air and the smell of old glue. Inside, a brick wall stretched the length of a tennis court, its surface layered with soot and tattered posters. Callum approached, notebook ready to analyze any colour that might linger beneath the paper. Instead, a subtle grid of paler squares emerged where bricks had been sheltered from daylight by pasted sheets. He rubbed one section with a cloth until flakes drifted like grey confetti, yet no hidden image appeared. A dry laugh escaped, half breath and half cough, as the echo slid along the empty room. The bare wall, striped by late light, stood motionless while loose dust pooled around his boots.

他雙手用力推把手，金屬尖叫一聲後便不再移動。指尖被鏽屑滑開，他只好在雜亂地面尋找可以施力的東西。碎木板倒在破木箱旁，他把木板卡進門縫當槓桿。即便如此，門只移動了一指寬，灰塵升起又再度落下。如果他事先帶了潤滑油，輪軌大概不會這麼抗拒，但時間不肯回頭。卡倫挺直身子、抖了抖肩，鼓起勇氣，用木板鈍端猛敲輪緣。下一次用力時，門在軌道上顫動，鏽片像乾雨般散落在混凝土地面。

門後竄出的空氣帶著涼意與舊膠水氣味。倉庫裡，一道長及網球場的磚牆覆滿煤煙與破海報。卡倫走近，準備好筆記本分析殘存色彩。相反地，他只看到更加淺色的方格，磚頭曾被海報遮擋而保持亮度。他用布擦拭其中一塊，灰屑像灰色紙花飄散，仍未露出任何圖像。一聲乾笑從他喉間溜出，半是呼氣半是咳嗽，回音在空屋裡滑動。磚牆被餘暉斑駁，靜止地站在那裡，鬆散的灰塵聚在他靴子周圍。
