Early light filled the narrow trail between pines.

Mila and Ben walked through the silent forest. Each child carried a small wooden boat. They carried the boats toward the wide creek downstream. The trail soon curved near a shallow canyon. Loose stones rolled under their shoes and slowed them. Ben nudged a larger stone away from the edge. The stone hit others and started a quick slide.

Dust lifted as pebbles showered down the canyon wall. One pebble bounced onto the path and broke Mila's boat. For a moment both children stared at the broken wood. Mila knelt and picked the larger piece. She saw a thin stick nearby and tied it across. The new shape could still float, but looked different. They reached the creek and placed both boats in water. Current took the boats around a bend beneath tall roots. Mila and Ben ran beside the flow and enjoyed the chase. Water splashed their shoes as the boats slipped from sight. They turned back toward the quiet forest path.
