Leo walked behind Hazel, the field mythologist who studied strange forest stones. He had promised to carry the folded map and a short metal compass. Noon light sifted through high branches. Warm air smelled of damp bark, and distant birdcalls mixed with leaf rustle. A ladybug began a slow orbit around the silver compass lid while they paused beside a fallen birch. That compass has been used on many short walks near town. The trail narrowed, then vanished under ferns that brushed Leo's knees. Hazel pointed toward a brighter patch ahead. Both pushed through, searching for the raised mound she had marked yesterday.

Instead of the mound, a wide clearing appeared, ringed by smooth, low stones. Sunlight crossed the space, yet the ground between the stones lay in shadow. Leo stepped forward, but an unseen dip swallowed his boot, and soft mud clamped around the leather. Water oozed, pulling harder each second. Hazel tried lifting him; the grip held firm. She set her pack down and gathered branches, laying them side by side to spread Leo's weight. The branches gave a small allowance, enough for his knee to reach firmer soil. When he pulled free, the mud released a hollow sound and revealed a rusty tin box. Hazel opened it; inside rested only dry seeds and a broken marble. The forest fell still again, and the map fluttered once before settling against a stone.
