Warm afternoon light slanted through the high windows of the small-town library. Dust drifted in slow spirals, too fine to hear yet bright enough to catch the eye. Mira balanced her laptop on one arm while scanning for an empty wall socket. Liam followed, cable dangling, shoulders tilted forward under the weight of his backpack. A broad oak table, polished yet scratched at the corners, blocked their route; it had been varnished many times by different caretakers, yet the grain still caught stray light. At the far end, a single patron leafed through newspapers, his chair squeaking in measured intervals. Mira set the laptop down; the goal stood clear between them: shift the table just enough for two plugs, disturb no customer, and finish before the next bell chimed.

Liam placed both palms against the table edge and pushed. The heavy legs barely moved; thick carpet threads resisted like bristles. His breath shot out in a terse burst. Mira crouched, fingers searching for wheels that were not there. Together they tried sliding instead of lifting, yet the tabletop tilted and clipped a shelf, rattling paperbacks. The patron’s chair scraped again. Mira’s eyebrows drew tight while Liam rolled his sleeves. If another reader entered, the narrow aisle would vanish entirely. They attempted a new angle, each grip shorter, each shove more controlled, but one corner of the table wedged against a metal waste-bin and refused every compromise their bodies attempted.

During the next heave, a muffled pop sounded under the table. A shallow drawer neither of them had noticed dropped open, scattering yellowed index cards across the carpet. Printed dates in fading ink fluttered like cards in a street trick. The unexpected sound stopped both of them; even the patron glanced over the newspaper edge. Under soft lamplight the cards lay untouched, yet the obstruction had changed: the bin could now be lifted through the fresh gap. Mira hoisted it aside, and the table finally rotated just far enough to clear the outlet. Liam plugged in two cables; their screens blinked awake. Above the scattered cards, the drawer stayed half-open.
