Soft afternoon light lay across the quiet park.

A light breeze moved thin leaves overhead.

Lily carried a small crate under one arm.

She walked toward a tall maple near the pond.

A wooden birdhouse hung on the highest branch.

She hoped to check the nest before evening.

Yesterday she saw fowl swimming below the tree.

Tiny ants crossed the dirt near her shoes.

Her fingers tapped the crate with quick rhythm.

The crate sank slightly into soft earth when she climbed.

It tilted, and Lily slipped forward, waving her arms.

A pinecone bounced downward, splashing water near the fowl.

Wings beat the surface, sending rings across the pond.

She stepped back and dragged the crate onto flat stone.

The surface felt firm, so she climbed again slowly.

Now her eyes reached the birdhouse opening.

Inside lay a blue toy car, not twigs.

She lifted it out and placed it beside the bench.

The empty nest remained; Lily will bring seed tomorrow.

A distant swing creaked above the quiet grass.
