The Bell That Hid Under the Bench-

English 原文
A grey squirrel leapt onto the picnic table, pausing long enough for its claws to scrape the wood. Liam jerked back, tilting the tray of pastries meant for the open-air brunch he and Mira were setting. The animal darted away, scattering dry leaves and exposing a flat metal circle half-buried beside a stone leg of the bench. Cool sunlight slanted between plane-tree branches, and the faint smell of rosemary drifted from a nearby planter. Nearby, folding chairs waited for an afternoon learning workshop, each seat holding an unopened sketchbook and two stubby pencils. Curiosity tugged at both friends, and they knelt beside the bench to inspect the newly revealed object.
The circle displayed faint scratches across its surface, like tiny rivers carved into dull metal. A smear of soil darkened one edge, and sunlight blinked when leaves overhead swung apart. Liam pressed his fingers against it, yet the disc refused to budge when he tried to twist. Mira fetched a wooden stirrer from the brunch basket; together they wedged the stick under the rim and levered carefully. Wet soil clung to the edges, and a small root tightened around the underside, adding awkward resistance. A boisterous line of children raced past, their shoes thumping, forcing Liam and Mira to shuffle closer to the bench for space. After a quick glance they chose to continue the delicate maneuver rather than return to the half-arranged meal.
At last the root snapped, and the circle flipped over, revealing a tiny clapper that glittered in open air. What they had treated as a stubborn lid now showed itself to be an old bicycle bell, its screw still attached. Some forgotten trailblazer of city cycling had probably lost it when the bench was first installed. The bell looked dented yet intact, and a quick shake produced a rust-soft chime that drew smiles from both. Mira dug into the basket, pulled out a narrow silk ribbon, and twisted it into a small loop. She looped the ribbon through the bell and around the scooter handle.
