Pale sand spread in every direction, broken by a chain of shallow basins left by last week’s rain. She hoped to record the rustle of reeds that bordered the largest basin, so she adventured beyond the last orange marker that outlined the event area. A facilitator from an earlier workshop trudged along another path, clipboard swinging, but he drifted out of view behind a low dune before either trail met the water.

Closer to the basin, wind streaked the surface and drove tiny waves against cracked clay. Lian knelt, bracing one knee; the ground flexed and a thin crust gave way, sinking her boot. Mud clung to the leather and pulled when she leaned back. She shifted her weight sideways, freed the boot with a soft pop, and edged along firmer sand. An unexpected shape lifted from the reeds—a white ibis with cinnamon-tipped wings. A sudden gust crossed the flats and pushed against the reeds. Stems bent, scratching each other like distant chimes. The ibis spread its wings, balancing. At that moment, a buried valve near the shore groaned; leftover water from the site’s plumbing test surged through a cracked pipe and spilled into the basin. The inflow turned the quiet pool into a miniature oasis, mixing fresh water with dust and lifting a swirl of dark silt. Ripples raced outward, slapped the tire, and splashed Lian’s ankles. Startled, the ibis launched upward; wingtips skimmed the turbulence and sent droplets flying in silver arcs. Lian’s mobile caught the burst of movement before the screen dimmed completely.

She lowered the phone, not sure whether the file saved. The reed bed kept swaying, and water continued to pour until pressure faded. The ibis circled once above the renewed pool and disappeared toward the brighter dunes. Lian wiped mud from her boot with a scrap of dry grass, then stepped back from the soft edge, watching the basin return to a slow roll. Above the pool, a loose feather spun in the returning silence.
