Ben stands near the river. The air is cool. He counts duck footprints. Soft sand holds each mark. A group of prints glisten. Light on water is bright. The glare hides some lines. Ben lifts one hand up. Shade drops over the sand. Now the prints look clear.
Near him, cracked ice thins. Small gaps widen each second. It covers a metal bucket. Drops slide down the rim. Farther out, soap foam drifts. White bits slide under ripples. The ring turns tiny. Ripples pull it apart. Ben looks back to sand. Only faint dents remain. The river flows without sound. The sand stayed almost smooth.
