Milo tipped a wooden cart so that a brightly painted plaything rolled under the low apple tree. Warm sunlight shimmered on the leaves, and distant water carried a soft earthy smell. The sphere touched a soft vine that had grown across the roots. The vine sprang up and brushed a branch covered with small white blossoms. Pollen drifted down and settled on an ant trail that had formed beside the trunk. Ants, disturbed by the sudden dust, poured out and crossed the grass in shifting dark lines. A curious beetle had been resting on a cracked leaf. It lifted its shell and followed the moving crowd. Milo and his friend Tessa crouched to explore the tangle. The insects formed a living barrier around the rolling toy.

Tessa has stretched an arm toward the ball. Her first attempt stopped when ants climbed over her sleeve. She pulled back, brushed them away, and whispered a quick laugh. They shifted sideways and found a narrow gap. They peer through blades of grass that bent beneath the weight of the marching beetle. Each movement of the insects pushed more petals onto the ground. A tiny lizard darted out to feed on the restless mass, adding fresh motion to the swirl. The children scooped a flat piece of bark. They slid it between the creatures and the toy, hoping to clear a path. The bark stuck halfway, forcing the swarm to split, but the toy still lay just beyond their reach. Trails of ants continued to weave across the bark toward the shaded roots.
